An offense that cannot block the favorite’s pass rush may struggle to sustain drives, which creates short fields and eventually overwhelms the points. Offensive line health and pressure rate can matter more than season-long win-loss records.
Can the defense force long drives?
Underdogs benefit when favorites have to string together many successful plays. Explosive-play prevention, red-zone defense and the ability to get off the field on third down can keep the score within range.
Does the game environment support variance?
Lower totals often make points more valuable because there are fewer possessions and fewer scoring opportunities. High-variance offenses can also create backdoor cover potential, but they may create turnover risk.
Check the number, not just the team
An underdog at +7.5 can be a very different wager from the same team at +5.5. Your handicap should include the specific margin you need, not a general desire to fade the favorite.
